If you’re looking to work in with great access to North Bay (without the North Bay prices) with access to an amazing provincial park – then South River might be the perfect fit for you and your family.

If you choose to live in the Northern end of the Almaguin Highlands – you definitely have a few advantages. Instead of Huntsville being your major center for shopping – you’ll buzz about 35 minutes up the highway to North Bay to grab anything beyond the essentials. 

North Bay is a very busy city, including a lovely newer hospital, Nipissing University, Canadore College, a small airport and the Canadian Forces Base North Bay – along with all of the supporting businesses for these communities. If you’re living in South River, you can easily access all that North Bay has to offer (hello Sushi restaurant – Beyond Sushi is my recommendation), while keeping your pricing low and country living in your day to day life.

South River has a gas station (Shell), grocery store (Freshmart), and library (South River Machar Union Public Library) – and has excellent road maintenance despite how rural the community is. My mother in law lives way out in the country outside of South River and has experienced amazing snow removal, even when having to leave at 5 am for work. South River also has a medical center – although you will have to be on a waitlist once you move in, it’s worth the wait to have local care right in town.

Your closest Home Hardware, car dealerships and vet offices are in Sundridge, about ten minutes away. (To read more about Sundridge – Click Here).

South River Public School is a small community school, which brings in students from the three surrounding townships. Once out of grade eight, the kids move into Almaguin Highlands Secondary – located right outside of town – which was built in 2011, and offers two specialist High Skills Major programs.

Mikisew Provincial Park is one of my favourite camping spots – being a smaller park it’s a lovely spot to spend a week, or even a few days, away. Eagle Lake is gorgeous and they have a fantastic dog beach – which is off leash! 

Located right in town is the South River Brewing Co – founded in 2009 – and is a great spot for picking up some beer for the weekend or going for a tour on a rainy day. 

Looking in the South River area, you can also look into Lount Township – which is an unorganized township nearby. Being an unorganized township brings great tax advantages and some great deals to be had. If you’re interested in learning more – please give me a call!
